Kluane Red Squirrel Project

The Kluane (pronounced Kloo-WAH-nee) region is located in the southwest Yukon of Canada. Our study site lies to the North and East of the St. Elias Mountains and Kluane National Park (61 N, 138 W). Our research camp is situated in the boreal forest but has picturesque views of the 3,400m peaks of the Kluane range. The area is one of the most beautiful in Canada and should be visited if you have the chance. For more than 5000 years the area has been inhabited by the Southern Tutchone people and today is home to the Champagne-Aishihik First Nation, which is one of the largest First Nations in the Yukon. Haines Junction is the closest town to our camp (~ 45 km) and is our source for mail, groceries, water, warm showers and conversation about things other than squirrels.
